Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers Recognize Foley Hoag
Boston, MA - August 12, 2008
Working Mother magazine, a leading source of information for career-oriented mothers, and Flex-Time Lawyers LLC, a national consulting firm advising attorneys and legal employers on work/life balance, have included Foley Hoag LLP in the prestigious list of the 50 “Best Law Firms for Women.” The two organizations have partnered for the second year in a row to recognize the top 50 firms that have created the best workplace to support the retention and advancement of women.
“Today nearly half of law school graduates are women. Law firms need to make a fundamental shift in their policies by instituting female and family-friendly benefits as Foley Hoag has done,” said Carol Evans, CEO, Working Mother Media. “We hope that by recognizing Foley Hoag, a paradigm shift will follow.”
Robert S. Sanoff, Managing Partner of Foley Hoag, noted: “This is an honor that recognizes the values that are most important to us. Like our recent inclusion on the American Lawyer “A-List” of the 50 firms that best balance a thriving business with their obligations to the profession, our inclusion among the 50 Best Firms for Women speaks to Foley Hoag’s ability to provide clients with the highest quality of representation by providing a work environment that is rooted in diversity and community.”
“While we are proud of the robust economic growth the firm has enjoyed over the past few years, we are even prouder that we have been able to achieve that success by remaining true to our values and culture. Having a diverse workforce has always been a core value for Foley Hoag. Foley Hoag was among the leaders in promoting women and minorities to partnership. Over the decades, we’ve responded by continuously providing the necessary support for the issues that women, men and families face as they juggle work-life demands,” Sanoff said.
Today, the firm is pleased to count among its distinguished alumni Laurie Burt, the Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Protection in Massachusetts, Gloria Larson, President of Bentley College, and Sandra Lynch, the first woman chief judge of the First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
“We hope other law firms will take notice of Foley Hoag’s commitment to change and competition will drive more creative ways to enhance work/life balance and improve the status of women in the profession,” said Deborah Epstein Henry, Founder and President, Flex-Time Lawyers LLC.
Foley Hoag is profiled in the August/September issue of Working Mother and at www.workingmother.com and www.flextimelawyers.com. The firm will be honored at a luncheon at the Mandarin Oriental in New York on September 15. That morning, Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers will hold a forum to report for the first time the findings of their national research on the trends and share best practices of work/life balance and women in the legal profession.
Methodology: The 2008 Best Law Firms for Women application was developed in a partnership between Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers LLC. Firms with at least 50 lawyers were eligible to apply and the application included detailed questions about the issues that are most important to the retention and promotion of female lawyers. Foley Hoag was selected based on responses to an application measuring areas such as workforce profile, family-friendly benefits and policies, flexibility, leadership, compensation, advancement and retention of women.
